ACIM, HLC, and A.R.E.

ACIM, HLC, A.R.E. - Virginia Beach, 2005

In 2005 I had an opportunity to spend some time in Virginia Beach. I had lined up some short term work there and figured I would spend my spare time at the library at A.R.E., The Association for Research and Enlightenment, the place founded to house and disseminate the works of Edgar Cayce. I'd been there before, but it was a brief visit. I knew about the place because I'd read books by or about Edgar Cayce when I was 12 and 13 years old. You could say I was an early adopter of what might be called new age spiritual thinking, though none of it is really new.

The main thing I wanted to do at A.R.E was to have a look at the HLC1 version of ACIM I'd heard about. It wasn't that I needed to read it, but like someone making a trip to Mecca or touching a holy relic, I wanted to see it, touch it, browse through its pages. I'd heard that it was available to view in the library.

I spent quite a bit of time at A.R.E., but I never got to see the Course in the HLC version. It had been more than 20 years since I'd visited A.R.E., but I still had a vague sense of knowing my way around. I went into the library and, at first thought I would just wander around and discover the Course. I felt that I'd know it when I got to it and wanted that sense of discovery to happen. I wandered and wandered and then looked more closely at everything. I didn't find it. So, then I went to the librarian and asked for it.

  1. 1. HLC are the initials of Hugh Lynn Cayce, Edgar Cayce's son. He was, at the time Helen and Bill were scribing the Course, in charge of A.R.E. and an associate of Bill Thetford.
